Spring Cleaning
When spring is in the air
And the flowers are in bloom,
It’s time to get to cleaning
That messy living room.
Push aside your tables
And turn up every chair.
Vacuum up the carpet
And refresh the dusty air.
Catch those pesky “bunnies”
Hiding underneath your couch.
A sparkling floor is only won
By those who dare to crouch.
Don’t forget the other rooms.
The kitchen needs a scrub.
And you don’t want to put off
Cleaning up that stained bathtub.
The bedrooms need a dusting
And a vacuuming as well,
And tossing out old junk will surely
Help improve the smell.
At last, your cleaning’s finished,
From the garage to the den.
Now you finally can relax…
Until spring rolls round again.
Sonnet to the March Flowers
For every bitter winter we endure,
A welcome spring will follow in due time.
As vivid colors brighten its allure,
We celebrate its flowers so sublime.
A loving mother offers an embrace,
While sisters give their strength in numbers too.
And when the toughest challenge you must face,
You’ll find support from all of them for you.
So every March, please celebrate the gift
That is those lovely ladies in your life,
For when your spirit finds it needs a lift,
They’ll often be the sun to end your strife.
Commemorate these gems for all their worth:
Dear women, the true flowers of the Earth.
Going Green
You wake in March, Day Seventeen,
To find the world is colored green
As far as you have ever seen
Across the festive streets.
You know today that people paint
The town in green, however quaint,
To honor Ireland’s patron saint
And all his holy feats.
And even if you’ve no belief,
You still don the lucky motif:
A shamrock with an extra leaf
To guide you on your way.
The day’s good luck is on your side
As people gather far and wide
And shout with joy and Irish pride:
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
Day of Heroines
We are all wonderful in our own ways,
Overqualified yet undervalued by the
Many people who underestimate us.
Every girl should know her worth, and
Never stop believing in her courage to
Stand up and let her voice be heard!
Don’t ever doubt your value, ladies!
Always remember how amazing you are!
You are all true superheroes!
A belated Happy Women’s Day to all the amazing and inspiring women out there! Keep on being the awesome superheroes you are!
Tigress
She’s docile and sweet on the outside,
But inside she’s fierce to the core.
You may think to expect her meow,
Just to be thrown back by her roar.
She spends her days working her hardest
For results of outstanding effect.
She may not ask others for much,
But she knows she deserves great respect.
Her value can never be measured.
She has a most generous heart.
Yet if anyone tries to subdue her,
She will fight back and tear them apart.
So never look down on a woman
Or misjudge her even an ounce,
For inside every placable kitten
Is a tigress just waiting to pounce.
White Dove
One cold evening,
I looked outside
At the ashen sky,
Trembling with grief
For the world
I once knew
And loved,
A world I feared
I might never
Know again.
But a white dove
Came to me,
Bathed in light,
And told me
Not to be afraid,
That the world
Could be better
If only I chose
To make it so.
She told me
That Light
Is stronger
Than Darkness,
That Hope
Is stronger
Than Fear,
That Love
Is stronger
Than Hate.
She reminded me
That just as
The night
Comes before
The dawn
And every storm
Is followed
By sunshine,
So does resistance
Precede acceptance.
Her words
Filled my heart
With hope
And gave
My spirit wings.
In that moment,
The fear I’d felt
Gave way to courage
And the promise
Of a brighter future.
As I watched her
Fly away
Into the sunset,
I smiled,
Knowing now
What I must do.
If I want to
Make the world
A better place,
I have to believe
I can start
With myself.
It’s time to
Be the change.
My submission to the February Poets for Peace collaboration. May we all be the change we wish to see in the world!
Your Wise Words
If there’s one thing I remember
From the days when I was small,
It’s the lessons that you taught me,
The wisest words of all.
You told me to be happy
In whatever I might do,
Whether writing for a living
Or finding love that’s true.
Your incredible work ethic
Was your family’s guiding light,
As you worked from early morning
To the late hours of night.
For the family you so love,
You do everything you can,
And your three adoring daughters
See you as their Superman.
You’re the best male role model
That a girl has ever had.
I’d say my greatest blessing
Is to have you for a dad.
So I say to you, dear father
(I think you know the rest),
I love you times a million!
May your birthday be the best!
Happy Birthday to my wonderful father! Thank you for your inspiring lessons and words of wisdom! I love you so much!
Perfect Valentine
There’s magic in the air tonight
As every star is shining bright
And tables dressed with candlelight
Adorn the moonlit deck.
You gaze into her lovely eyes,
Having come to realize:
Without her in your life, surprise,
You still would be a wreck.
But ever since she came along,
Your days have all been filled with song,
And everything would just feel wrong
Were she to leave your life.
So slowly you begin to smile
As you adore her for a while,
Thinking to yourself that “I’ll
Ask her to be my wife.”
And so you take her by the hand
And gradually begin to stand
Before you drop to one knee and
Request that she’ll “be mine”.
The question “Will you marry me?”
Is followed by her shouts of glee
As you embrace her lovingly,
Your perfect Valentine!
A Brand New Year
So another new year has begun,
And we hope it’ll be a good one.
Though it still seems surreal
From the way that we feel,
We’ll at least try to make it more fun!
‘Cause the last year we suffered was rough.
For too many of us, it was tough.
From the people we lost
To the morals it cost,
Of Twenty Sixteen, we’ve had enough!
So we’re hoping this year to start clean
And to set a more promising scene.
We’ll let go of the past
And move forward at last.
Here’s to a bright Twenty Seventeen!
Happy New Year, dear readers! May you all have a blessed 2017!
My Twenty Sixteen
My Twenty Sixteen was chaotic,
An interesting twelvemonth at best.
There were times when I felt in control,
And times I was put to the test.
I managed my greatest achievement
Through months of a studying spree,
‘Til at last I defended my thesis
And earned me a Master’s degree!
Though in writing I’ve always been active,
I found it was hard to keep pace.
With my thesis, my blog, and my novels,
This year’s been a creative race!
November by far closed the hardest
Of modern political years,
As I spent the eighth shaking profusely
And woke the next morning in tears.
Yet I’ve braved the emotion and chaos,
And I’m ready to start fresh and clean.
Let’s just hope it gets better from now on!
Have a Happy Twenty Seventeen!
Happy New Year to all my family, friends, and readers! I hope you had a pleasant 2016, and that you all have a wonderful 2017!
