Passion
Kiss these tender lips
Tremble as the heart flutters
Ardently in love
Fire burns within
Rage erupts in violence
Feel the seething hate
Unending cycle
First a blessing, then a curse
Passion knows no bounds
A Great Man
A good man is noble
In every which way.
He’s kind and he’s generous
Day after day.
A good man is smart,
And he truly is wise.
You can tell what he knows
By the light in his eyes.
A good man is joyful.
He laughs frequently.
Yet he also works hard
For his dear family.
Well, I know a man
Who is all of these things.
A great man who, in my eyes,
Could stand among kings.
For a great man is rare
Among plain good and bad.
And the greatest I know
Is the man I call Dad.
Happy Birthday to my amazing dad! Thank you for being such a great influence in my life! I love you!
Music and Lyrics
If you write a melody
Gentle and sweet,
I’ll write the lyrics
To go with the beat.
Such beautiful music,
The notes you compose.
It touches my heart
When I hear how it flows.
The lyrics I write
Must live up to your sound,
With rhymes about love
And the joy we have found.
So write me a tune
And I’ll write you the words
To a song we’ll create
As a pair of lovebirds.
And our love will shine bright
For the whole world to see
In the music and lyrics
Of our harmony.
Dedicated to my best friend and loving boyfriend. Thank you for enriching my life with your wonderful music. Happy Valentine’s Day! I love you, sweetheart!
Powerless
You used to be so powerful.
You could do whatever you wanted.
You could get away with anything.
Because I let you.
You had such control over me.
Anything you said, I believed.
If you said it wasn’t worth it,
I agreed without thinking.
If you said I should give up,
I would stop on the spot.
If you said I would fail,
I wouldn’t even try.
But I realize now
That you were in my way,
That I could be so much more
Without you to stop me.
Now I’ve finally had enough.
I’m sick of holding back.
I’m tired of being afraid.
So go away, Fear.
Take your empty threats
And vanish into thin air.
You don’t control me anymore.
I’m in charge now.
I’m taking back my life.
You are powerless,
And I, at long last, am free.
The Chase
(What If? Exercise: Read the description here.)
All she ever wanted was to be one of them.
To become a sister, you must complete a task.
Bring back the necklace hidden in the woods.
They didn’t mention she’d have to run.
The sound of howling terrified her.
The beast was gaining fast.
She reached the gate.
Almost free now.
She pulled…
This piece is based on What If? Exercise 93: “Ten to One”. The exercise is to write a 55-word story in which the first sentence has ten words, the second has nine, etc., until the last sentence has only one word. The objective is to show that precision and thrift in writing can produce surprisingly powerful results. I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
The Siren’s Retribution
(First place winner of Writer’s Carnival’s Author-less Flash contest!)
“He promised he’d return today.”
Serena stroked the coral comb through her hair for the umpteenth time. Locks of gold will stop a man cold, her mother used to sing.
“Not this year.”
“You don’t know that, Kay.”
“The day’s done. He won’t come this year. Just as he didn’t last, just as he won’t next.”
Serena shot the dolphin a piercing look.
“Fine.” She plucked an oyster from where the waves crashed against the rock and pried it open with the comb to reveal an engraved black pearl. Turning it over in her fingers, she chanted a haunting song until the pearl vanished into dust on the ocean breeze.
“Whose life this year?”
“His sister’s.”
“Too close. Why not just take his and be done with it?”
“He needs to learn his lesson.”
The friends watched the sun sink into the horizon, concealing a ship that would never appear.
“Sailors are too fickle.”
“Dolphins are too cheeky.”
“And mermaids are too spiteful.”
“He’ll come for me. You’ll see.”
A hint of warning in his eyes, Kay disappeared beneath the waves. Serena’s tail glimmered in the twilight as she combed her golden hair, alone.
“He promised.“
Give Me Freedom
Give me light,
And I will have sight.
I will see the world
And try to learn its ways.
Give me passion,
And I will have spirit.
I will grow and change
As I find my own path.
Give me wisdom,
And I will have mind.
I will form my own ideas
And create my own life.
Give me courage,
And I will have heart.
I will stand for my beliefs
And fight for my true rights.
But above all,
Give me freedom
To see,
To feel,
To think,
To speak,
And I will have a voice.
And I will at last exist.
Freedom is a basic human right, not a privilege. My thoughts and prayers are with all the people affected by the senseless tragedies in France. May our free voices never be silenced. #JeSuisCharlie
Rainbow
Reds, blues and greens
Arched across the sky
Illuminate the heavens in
Numerous brilliant hues.
Beauty in a spectrum
Of seven vivid colors is a
Wonder of nature’s perfection.
A Year Begun
How has an entire year
Already gone by since
People were last here to
Party ’til midnight and beyond?
Yesterdays vanish like a dream.
Now the countdown begins.
Everyone sounds off the seconds,
Waiting for midnight… Three… two… one…
You and I cheer with everyone as fireworks
Explode and shower the sky in vivid colors.
After tonight, I’m filled with excitement,
Ready to start an amazing new year!
Happy New Year, dear readers! May you all have a wonderful and prosperous 2015 full of love, happiness and creative inspiration! Bless you all!
Holiday Cheer
My favorite time of year has arrived!
Everyone in the family will be here,
Ready to celebrate the holidays and
Rejoice together over a wonderful
Year gone by and a new one to come.
Chestnuts roast over an open flame,
Holly hangs along the walls, and
Reindeer pull a sleigh across the lawn.
I won’t sleep tonight, knowing
Santa Claus will place gifts under the
Tree decorated with brightly colored lights.
Mistletoe is hung in the hallway as I hear
Angelic voices caroling outside.
Sing of all this blessed holiday cheer!
Hope you’re all having a wonderful holiday season! A belated Merry Christmas to all, and a Happy New Year!
