The Miracle You Are
A “Gift from God”
Is what they said you are.
They called you a surprise,
Sent to bring more joy
Into our lives.
And they were right,
Because you’re nothing short
Of a miracle.
You’re the light
That shines every day
In our hearts.
You’re the sun
That brightens
Our gloomiest days.
You’re the flower
That graces us
With extraordinary beauty.
You’re the fire
That burns fiercely
On the theater stage.
You’re the sugar
That makes our lives
A little sweeter.
You’re the songbird
That always sings
With such a lovely voice.
You’re the rainbow
That paints our world
In vivid colors.
You’re the star
That illuminates
Our very souls.
But above all,
You’re the miracle
That fills our lives
With unending love.
May God bless you
As you have blessed us,
As you bless me every day.
I love you!
Happy Birthday to my amazing baby sister! Thank you for the miracle you are! Blessings to you on your special day and for your whole life. I love you!
Recipe for a Writer
Take one extraordinary mind.
Add four tablespoons of fresh ideas
(Assorted flavors work best),
Two cups of emotion,
And a pinch of eccentricity.
Stir well,
Seasoning with experience
At regular intervals (to taste).
Bake for several years
Until creativity forms,
Then let sit for another few years
Until motivation rises.
Enjoy indefinitely!
Makes: one writer
Serves: one audience of readers
Based on a writing prompt from a social event on Writer’s Carnival: Recipe Medley.
Share your favorite recipe! It can be a real recipe for food or beverage OR it can be a totally made up one. Your choice!
I took the opportunity to imagine what makes a writer, and it was a lot of fun trying to write it all in the form of a recipe! I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
Twenty-Five Flavors
Oh how I love you,
Sweet icy treat,
A rainbow of flavors
I’m longing to eat.
From soft hues of cream
To bright fruity tones,
In small plastic bowls
Or big waffle cones.
Vanilla with syrup
Or chocolate with nuts.
Sprinkles on strawberry
Or coconut.
Double fudge brownie,
Mint chocolate chip,
Rocky road, cherry
And caramel dip.
Cookies ‘n’ cream,
Peanut butter swirl,
Butter pecan
And vanilla fudge twirl.
Orange, banana
And pineapple too.
Mango or lemon
Or berries of blue.
Tiramisu
And pistachio.
Cheesecake with berries
Or coffee to go.
Sweet neapolitan:
Three-in-one deal.
Soothing green tea
For an exotic feel.
One flavor, two flavors,
Five all in one,
Great to enjoy
In the heat of the sun.
Oh how I love you,
Dear icy sweet.
Twenty-five flavors
Make one perfect treat.
As you can imagine, the idea for this poem came to me while I was feeling both hot and hungry. Hope all of you in the Northern Hemisphere are enjoying your summer!
What I Miss About You
You may think
I have a dozen reasons
Not to miss you.
You may think
We’ve grown apart,
That I don’t think of you often,
That I no longer care.
But the truth is that
For every reason I may have
Not to miss you
Now and then,
I have a dozen more
To miss you like crazy
Every day.
I miss your sharp wit
That never failed
To make us laugh.
I miss your beautiful face
That always made the room
A little brighter.
I miss your clever projects
That kept us entertained
For hours on end.
I miss your caring nature
That made the rest of us
Feel so loved.
I miss the time we used to spend
Watching dozens of funny videos.
I miss the nights we used to stay up
Talking and laughing.
I miss the games we used to play,
The songs we used to sing,
The stories we used to tell
Of the life we had growing up.
But most of all,
I miss knowing that nearby,
I always have my lifelong friend.
Know that I wish you all the best
In your life out there,
And always remember that
No matter where you are,
I miss you every day,
And I love you.
Happy Birthday to my awesome little sister! Wishing you the very best on your special day and in everything you do in life! Miss you so much! I love you!

From Daughter to Father
Teaching me everything you know about
How to succeed in this world will
Always be the greatest gift you’ve ever given me.
Never will I forget all the
Knowledge you’ve shared to help me be the best I can be.
Your love and wisdom are blessings,
Opening my eyes to new ideas and
Unbelievable experiences that I can take with me for life.
Days, weeks, years may pass, but
As life goes on, this message of gratitude remains in my heart:
Daddy, thank you for everything! I love you!
Happy Father’s Day to my awesome dad! Thank you for all you’ve ever taught me about life! I value and cherish your wisdom every day! I love you!
One
To stop me in my tracks,
To root me to the spot,
To fix my subtle gaze,
It takes one look.
To slow my racing heart,
To make me catch my breath,
To chill me to my core,
It takes one breath.
To make my heartbeat skip,
To take away the world,
To make me feel alive,
It takes one kiss.
One look,
One breath,
One kiss,
From you.
And all my fears will fade
As all my dreams come true
In one romantic kiss
With you.
So hold me in your arms
And love me all your life,
And always I will live
To be with you.
And every look I spare,
And every breath I take,
And every kiss I give
Will be for you.
My love,
My life,
My One.
Yet another old poem I dug up. As you can imagine, I wrote this while thinking about someone special. Fun fact: he was so inspired by my poem that he wrote music for it and used these words as lyrics. For now the song is just between us, but maybe we’ll share it someday. Hope you enjoy the piece! Thanks for reading!
Butterfly Wings
Butterfly wings
Flutter by
Many colors
Catch my eye
Floating on
The gentle breeze
Those lovely wings
Show grace and ease
Kiss the petals
Of a rose
The scarlet of
A blossom grows
Reflected in
Those purple scales
Open wide
Like billowed sails
Touch the dewdrops
On the green
Wash those wings out
Fresh and clean
Flutter on
As morning calls
Orange light
On wingtips falls
Yellow flowers
Streaked with blues
Light those wings
In varied hues
A butterfly
I’d love to be
To paint a rainbow
And fly free
Jack’s Horse
Sure is tough to live like me,
As you very well can see.
Got a cowboy on my back
(Pretty sure his name is Jack).
He’s been eatin’ more and more,
And my back is awful sore.
But I guess it’s all the same
To a horse without a name.
Based on a writing prompt from Writer’s Carnival: Horseplay.
Write 50 words of poetry, no more and no less, on what it means to be a horse.
I improvised this piece for a writing challenge in about five minutes. It wasn’t easy to write a poem using only 50 words, but at least it was fun to try! I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
Angst
I’m so sick.
I’m tired.
Did I fail?
Have I done anything right?
Am I doing anything right?
What do my feelings count for?
Anything?
Are they worthless?
Am I worthless?
No, I’m not.
I hate feeling so lonely.
I don’t talk to anyone.
But I want to.
I miss talking to someone.
I just want to be heard.
Is there any respect for me?
For how I feel?
I feel undermined,
Without value.
I’m afraid.
I’ve brought this on myself
Because I’m afraid.
Afraid of what they will say.
I don’t want their advice sometimes.
I just want someone to listen.
I’ve been reduced to talking to myself.
Because I feel like only I hear me.
Someone please listen.
Please listen.
Please.
I feel so alone.
I’m not like you.
My feelings don’t go away
With just a smile.
They come back,
Even worse,
If left unshared.
They must be set free.
I can’t let go.
I’m not like you.
I can’t let go
Of my sadness
And anger
And fear,
Not by myself.
I have to release them
To the world.
I want to scream,
And break things,
And hurt myself
When I’m left alone too long.
The feelings build up inside me,
And I can’t let them go by myself.
They have nowhere to go,
So they come back.
They need somewhere to go.
So I need to be heard.
I need someone to listen,
And not make me afraid to speak.
Do not undermine me.
Do not belittle my emotions.
Respect me.
They are big to me,
They are important to me.
Listen,
And they will be set free.
And I will be free.
While feeling particularly blue one day, I decided to turn my angst into a writing exercise. I took a pencil and a sheet of paper and just kept writing nonstop until I reached the bottom of the page. This is what came out. The poem is made purely of raw emotion; the only editing I did was to arrange one long paragraph into poetic verses. I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
