Sonnet to a Great Mentor
A gift with which I’m blessed in every way
Is someone who is always there for me.
A mentor guiding me through every day
To help me be the best that I can be.
You give me hope whenever I am sad,
Encourage me to follow every dream.
You teach me to have faith when times are bad,
For things are not as dire as they may seem.
I’m thankful for your loving warm embrace,
For every time you help me rise above,
For every chance to see your smiling face
And know that I will always have your love.
The greatest wish God ever made come true
Was giving me a mother just like you.
Happy Birthday to my amazing mother! Thank you so much for all your love and support, and for being the best mentor I could ever ask for! I love you!
Turn of the Seasons
Flowers bloom and grow
Paint the world in bright colors
Love is in the air
Brave the burning sun
Play between the sea and shore
Lights pop in the sky
Leaves changing color
Scents of harvest fill the air
Taste Nature’s bounty
Snowflakes floating down
Pure white blanket drapes the land
A new year begins
Autumn Leaves
The autumn leaves outside my window fall
To dress the earth in hues of red and gold.
Amid the trees, I hear the dawn birds call,
Their songs imbued with tales from days of old.
I walk outside into the chilling air
And smile at leaves that fall like golden rain,
For never does the world look quite so fair
As when the treetops weep and shed their pain.
The summer leaves behind its scarring burns.
The winter threatens darkness yet unknown.
And though the spring renews the seasons’ turns,
The autumn shines with grandeur of its own.
Such colors on the leaves make crystal clear
Why autumn is my favorite time of year.
Summer Skies
A pair of rabbits hopping by,
A fox in hot pursuit.
A gentleman plays cello
While a lady plays the flute.
A blooming flower smiles
At a feather on the breeze.
A mouse hides in the corner
With a stolen piece of cheese.
A pirate ship goes sailing
On the early morning tide.
A whale swims within its wake,
Its great jaws open wide.
An arrow streaks across the sky,
Shot from an archer’s bow.
A sapling sprouts, and soon enough,
A tree begins to grow.
Circles, squares and diamonds
All seem oddly out of place
In a world with mermaids, dragons
And a giant human face.
Spotting complex figures
Is a pastime that I love.
How many shapes can you see
In the summer clouds above?
Based on a writing prompt from Writer’s Carnival: Cloud Shaping.
You are lying on your back with your best friend watching the clouds go by. Write a shortish poem about the shapes you see.
It may not exactly be “shortish”, but I had fun writing this poem nonetheless. I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
Ask Me Why I’d Wait For You
Ask me what I want the most,
And I’ll tell you
I want to be with you.
Ask me if I know it won’t be easy,
And I’ll tell you
I don’t mind one bit.
Ask me if I’m sure,
And I’ll tell you
I’d do whatever it takes.
Ask me why I would,
And I’ll tell you
It’s because I love you.
Ask me why I do,
And I’ll tell you
It’s because you make me happy.
Ask me how happy you make me,
And I’ll tell you
I wouldn’t wait this long for anyone else.
Ask me why I’d wait for you,
And I’ll smile
Because you already know.
I want to be with you
Because you’re worth the wait.
Happy Birthday to my best friend and adoring boyfriend! Thank you for being so wonderful! I hope to be with you again soon. I love you, sweetheart!
Close Encounters
Personal Log – Planet CCCLXV: Day 3
We had our first encounter with native intelligent lifeforms today. As expected, they’re rather bizarre and, in my opinion, frightfully ugly. They have rigid figures topped with a single round multi-cavity structure, which we suspect hold their cognitive centers. Each lifeform only possesses two optical organs, both of which face forward; it’s a wonder how they can see anything at all. Stranger still, however, are the limbs protruding from their cores: four stiff members that bend in the middle. It’s lucky those limbs are jointed, else the creatures wouldn’t be able to move or perform any functions. Speaking of functions… No, perhaps it’s best we don’t understand. That would be the stuff of nightmares to last for weeks.
Adapted from a writing prompt from Writer’s Carnival: Alien Reversal.
Write a paragraph on an encounter with an alien… only you are the alien meeting a human for the first time. Make it funny, scary or completely off the wall.
I imagine extraterrestrials would be just as horrified by us as we would be by them! I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
The Circus Dancers
It’s you and me, sweetheart.
Don’t be afraid. Forget the crowd, the lights, the world. Just like we practiced, all alone in the tent every night.
Follow my lead: reach out your gentle trunk and lift me into the air. I’ll climb aboard, and we’ll dance in the ring like only the stars are watching.
Everyone will love us, but we don’t dance for them. We don’t dance for anyone but us.
Tonight, baby, it’s only you and me.
Based on a circus-themed writing prompt from Writer’s Carnival: Class Act.
Using 100 words or less, write about a circus act. […] You can describe it, write about it from the POV of the circus performer, or even make up your own circus act.
The circus act I chose was a dance between a trainer and her beloved elephant partner. I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
Note: for the record, I consider the use of animals in circus performing highly unethical and am strongly against it (which is why the only circus I really like is Cirque du Soleil). I simply took advantage of a circus-themed writing prompt to portray an emotional bond between a human and an elephant, as I consider elephants to be among the most fascinating creatures in the world. Thank you!
My Unusual Lady
Oh lady, my lady
With long raven hair.
There isn’t a soul
Who would not stop and stare.
Your eyes are like diamonds
That sparkle so bright.
And with that physique,
You could win any fight.
You tower above us,
So wonderfully tall.
An amazon woman,
The fairest of all.
And though some would say
That it’s terribly weird,
Your loveliest trait
Is your long scruffy beard.
Based on a circus-themed writing prompt from Writer’s Carnival: Ode to the Lady.
You don’t know what it is, but the bearded lady holds some magical attraction for you. But she won’t give you the time of day. You decide to express your love in verse. Write a poem, any style, to the bearded lady. Examples of some poetry forms would be free verse, sonnet, limerick, ode, ballad, etc.
Though I wrote this poem in less than 15 minutes, I’m quite pleased with how it turned out. I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
The Best Love
What is the best kind of love?
Is it love at first sight?
That rush you feel
When you first set eyes
On that beloved person?
The idea that fate
Brought you together
And nothing in the world
Could tear you apart?
Is it love based on mutual interest?
The safe path of dating
Until you find someone
Who matches you perfectly?
The comfort of knowing
You’ve finally found
That one person
Who makes you truly happy?
Is it love that started as hate?
The endless passionate fire
Turned upside-down?
The surprise of discovering
That someone you could
Never live with
Becomes someone you could
Never live without?
Or is it love born from friendship?
Knowing your partner
From the inside out?
Having someone with whom
To share your deepest thoughts,
Your greatest dreams,
Your darkest fears?
Always believing
You have somebody close
Who you can trust completely?
Being one half of a whole
Who have nothing to hide
From one another
And who love each other
For exactly who they are?
Yes, love comes in many forms,
But the best kind of love
Is a love that was
Always true from the start.
Dedicated to my parents, who taught me that the best way to fall in love is with your best friend. May your Happily Ever After truly last forever! I love you both so much!
Run, Johnny, Run!
No one could believe it when they saw Johnny in first place. He was moving so fast, spectators hardly noticed him the moment he came round the corner. Just two more miles, he thought, then he’d finally prove himself to the whole town. “No one can move like Johnny!” they’d say. “He beat the world record!” Yes, he’d be a champion, and for the first time in his life, everybody would care.

Based on a writing prompt from Writer’s Carnival: Banana Split.
Write a mini scene, no more than 200 words, about anything at all. Then when you’re finished, take two words and swap them with their opposites (for example, you would switch love with hate or cold with hot, left with right, etc.). Try to pick words that will scramble the read and/or make it humorous.
To make my way of thinking clear, I wrote out both versions of this scene: first the original, then the opposite. I hope you enjoy what I’ve written. Thanks for reading!
